Cinnamon Rolls

Homemade Cinnamon Rolls


Recipe yields approximately 25 rolls 3" in diameter

  • Start with 3 cups of flour (3 - 4 more cups will be added later)  Mixer
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons of Active Dry Yeast or one individual package
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3 cups hot tap water 

If you have a mixer with a dough hook like a Kitchen Aid mixer mix the above ingredients with a mixer. Then add one cup of flour at time until dough is firm and not sticky. It will require 6 to 7 cups total of flour. If you do not have a dough hook you can start with a regular mixer but then turn your dough onto a board after the fourth cup of flour and knead by hand as you add the remaining flour.

Personal NOTE: I used to always knead it by hand until arthritis made that painful for me. My husband gave me a heavy duty Kitchen Aid mixer for Christmas one year and I am so thankful because I use it often. My Kitchen Aid Mixer will do all the hard work for me. Rolling Out the Dough

Place the dough on a generously floured table, board, or countertop. Flour the Rolling pin well then roll out the dough until about 1/2" flat. Melt 1/2 cup butter and pour over the dough. Use the back side of a tablespoon to spread the butter evenly. Spread approximately 1/2 - 3/4 cup of sugar over the butter, then sprinkle a layer of ground cinnamon over the sugar layer.  Running your fingertips up the side of the dough back and forth until you have rolled the entire dough into log shape about 3" in diameter.

Cutting the Rolls

Do not use a knife to cut the rolls because it will flatten and give the rolls an odd shape. Use instead a strong thread such a quilting thread cut approximately 17". Slide the thread under the roll. Then pull both end up meeting in the same place on top. Cut each roll about 1 1/2" lengths and place in a greased baking pan. Bake 350° approxiately 25 minutes or until golden brown. Glaze Topping

In a small bowl mix 1 cup of confectionary sugar, 2 teaspoons cinnamon, and 1 - 2 Tablespoons of milk. Add the milk slowly. This glaze needs to be thick and not runny. Let the glaze drip from the spoon as you wiggle it to make the fine thin lines of glaze which adds a nice touch for asthetic beauty as well as another touch of cinnamon flavoring
